How do I commission a piece of jewellery?

Rebecca Davies

If you have ever wondered how to commission a piece of jewellery, here’s some helpful advice.

Firstly, it’s important to understand the difference between commissioning a piece and personalising a piece of jewellery. Commissioning a piece of jewellery is different to personalising one. Adding personalisation to an existing design is relatively straightforward and the options to add Initials, names or phrases to my designs are laid out for you to see here. People commission a piece of jewellery when they want something completely bespoke to them. Whether it is a fancy pendant or an alternative style engagement ring, or even a pair of earrings for a special occasion! All types of jewellery are possible, you just have to contact me with your ideas so we can bring them to life. Before getting in touch, take a look at the following steps and make sure you have thought of everything!

1. Choosing Me. Before deciding if you want me to commission your jewellery, I really recommend you look at my items, the type of work I make and my style, to be sure it is the type of look you are going for - Simple, minimalist & fun! Be sure that I am the one you want to bring your idea to life!

2. Ideas. The next step is to have an idea of what you want in mind. It is really important to come to me with an idea (the more information, the better), including any little details, texture, finish you want? All my work will be made in recycled sterling silver as standard - but if you want additions of gold, copper or brass, that can be done! It can really help to look at some of my other work as a starting point, and think about what parts of it you like - be sure to jot your ideas down before getting in contact so we can work together to create the perfect piece of jewellery for you. Whilst I’m happy for you to show me photos of other jeweller’s work to explain or illustrate what you want, please don’t ask me to copy someone else's work.

3. Get in touch. I don’t mind how you chose to contact me, a DM on socials, email or via the contact form on my website - You can usually expect a response within 48hrs. We can have a chat about your ideas and what design is possible. I will then generate a quote for you so you know straight away how much you would be looking at. A non-refundable deposit of 50% must be paid upon agreement of the commission so that the materials can be purchased and the remaining 50% must be paid before the item is finished and posted out.

4. Designing & Making. After the deposit has been made, the design will be finalised with you, and you will have the option to make any revisions before work starts on making it. The time it takes to make will depend on the intricacy of the piece and whether it is hallmarked. I will provide you with an estimated timeframe when quoting, and also keep you updated throughout the process. I can even send you progress pictures if you would like to see the behind-the-scenes of how it is made.

5. Finishing & Posting. Before posting it out to you, your piece will have a final check-over and polish before being packaged. All my commission pieces are sent fully tracked and insured. When you receive your item, be sure to let me know! I absolutely love to receive photos and feedback, it is an amazing feeling to see people wearing the jewellery I have made. If you post photos online, please tag me so I can see them!
